Minestarters Atlas analysis

Summary

Empire Metals has achieved a significant metallurgical milestone at its Pitfield project, successfully producing high-purity rutile pigment with a calculated grade of 99.2% TiO₂ from its anatase-rich titanium ore. This was accomplished through optimized hydrolysis and calcination in a 'production test', confirming the conversion to rutile crystal form and advancing the company's plans for the architectural coatings market. An unexpected 0.65% sulphur content was noted but is expected to be removed during high-temperature calcination.

Reasoning: The document reports a significant metallurgical milestone for Empire Metals' Pitfield project, successfully producing high-purity rutile pigment (99.2% TiO₂) from its anatase-rich titanium ore through optimized hydrolysis and calcination, which is a critical step for project development and market entry.

Positive factors

  • Successful production of high-purity rutile pigment (99.2% TiO₂) from Pitfield's titanium ore
  • Advanced 'production test' scale indicates robust results
  • Conversion of TiO₂ to rutile crystal form confirmed

Low confidence — this extraction should be reviewed alongside the original source.

Reasoning: The successful production test yielded an exceptionally high calculated pigment grade of 99.2% TiO₂ for rutile pigment, which is a critical quality metric for marketability and confirms the viability of the hydrolysis and calcination process for Pitfield's anatase-rich material, despite an initial manageable sulphur impurity.

Positive factors

  • Achieved a very high calculated pigment grade of 99.2% TiO₂ for rutile pigment, which is excellent for market specifications
  • Successful conversion of anatase-rich material into rutile crystal form confirmed by X-ray analysis
  • Test conducted at an advanced 'production test' scale, indicating robust and reliable results

Negative factors

  • Initial unexpected 0.65% sulphur content, though it is expected to be removed during high-temperature calcination

Empire Metals Ltd ( AIM:EEE OTCQX:EPMLF ) View Price & Profile Empire Metals shows latest milestone with sucessful production test Published: 07:24 24 Sep 2026 BST Empire Metals Ltd (AIM:EEE, OTCQX:EPMLF) told investors it has successfully produced rutile pigment from its Pitfield titanium ore in Western Australia, advancing plans to target the architectural coatings market where coated pigment currently commands average prices of around US$3,250 a tonne. The latest testwork converted Pitfield’s anatase-rich material into rutile by optimising hydrolysis and calcination conditions within the company’s processing flowsheet. X-ray analysis confirmed all contained TiO₂ was present in rutile crystal form. Chemical testing returned 97.6% TiO₂ because of an unexpected 0.65% sulphur content, which Empire said would normally be removed during high-temperature calcination. Adjusting for the anomaly gave a calculated pigment grade of 99.2% TiO₂. Further work is now focused on reducing remaining impurities and developing the coating stage needed to meet architectural paint specifications. Architectural coatings account for around 2.3 million tonnes of annual TiO₂ pigment demand, roughly a third of global production. Independent data cited by Empire puts the final finishing cost for coated rutile pigment at around US$250-US$320 per tonne for the sulphate process, excluding upstream mining and processing. Empire is also continuing titanium metal development with Murdoch University. A high-temperature test rig has been completed and is being commissioned ahead of proof-of-concept testing, with the programme targeting completion of the current phases in early 2027.
